The Sunnah of Tahajud
Did Muhammad (sws) offer Qayam-ul-Lail or Tahajud during Ramadan congregations only, or any time of the year? Did he offer twenty rakats in Tarawih prayers or during Qayam-ul-Lail during the last part of Ramadan?
Answer
My information is that the prophet, alaihissalaam, offered Tahajud for three nights in the Masjid in a way that there were companions who were behind him. This practice never happened for throughout Ramadan, as is done now even for once. It also seems from the ahadith that he always offered eleven rakats of prayers in his tahajud. As far as I know, no exception to this rule has been reported. However, it does seem that he allowed his companions to say more rakats if they so wanted.
