At the time of death, I would not want to leave a burden to my family. Is it haram to prepare for one’s funeral? Specifically, could one save money in the case of one’s death? Or even further, could one purchase a burial plot during one’s life?

It is very difficult to say that any such thing is Haram. In fact, if you believe that you have a poor family, and you wouldn’t like to burden them with the burial expenses after your death, there is nothing wrong with the idea. What one must bear in mind, however, is that Islam would like people to worry more about the problems that we are likely to confront in the afterlife rather than to worry about the present worldly life of the family. What you should worry you more is the future of your family in the hereafter.
